Loving our new FD15D

Ivan and his team were extremely helpful and patience when dealing with us. We hope to make a quick trip to QLD in the near future and then further trips after that. Overall we are extremely happy. Thanks heaps Ivan and team from Rob and Robyn.” – Robyn L

Pre-Trip Caravan Maintenance Check
Embarking on a caravan trip is an exciting prospect where the open roads, new destinations, and the promise of memorable experiences beckon. However, the journey’s success often hinges on the preparations made before setting out. One of the most critical tasks in this preparation is ensuring your caravan is in its prime condition to tackle the road ahead. So, before you set out on your next adventure, be sure to work through this checklist to make sure your caravan is ready for the road ahead.

Recognizing the Importance of Regular Checks
Every seasoned traveller knows that prevention is key. Investing a small amount of time in preventative maintenance can shield you from unexpected issues, ensuring your journey remains smooth and free from unpleasant surprises.
Secure the Couplings
A loose or damaged coupling can lead to disastrous consequences on the road. Check all caravan couplings, including override, hydraulic, and fixed types, to ensure they’re securely fastened. Also, give the safety chains a thorough inspection to ensure there is no rust or other signs of corrosion that could cause them to fail.
Braking Safely
The caravan’s brakes are its primary safety feature. Conduct low-speed brake tests, inspect the brake pads for any signs of rust, corrosion, or wear, and make certain the handbrake is functioning and moving freely.
Wheel and Tyre Inspection
A blown tyre or a loose wheel on a highway can be perilous. Regularly inspect your tyre tread depth, ensure that they are inflated to the correct pressure, check rims for any cracks or other signs of damage, and listen for any unusual noises when checking wheel bearings.
Naturally, if you have concerns about any parts of your tyre or wheels, get them replaced – the expense may sting but it’s better than crashing.

Lighting the Way
All internal and external lights, including indicators, must be in perfect working condition before you hit the road. Regularly check their functionality and always carry spare bulbs or lights to avoid being caught off-guard in case one dies.
Dealing with Unwanted Guests
Especially after long storage periods, caravans can become a haven for bugs or insects. Thoroughly check for any infestations, clean as necessary, and repair any damage that they might have caused.
Powering Up
Electrical failures can really put a dampener on your trip. To avoid rolling into camp and being unable to turn the lights on, ensure all batteries are fully charged in advance and that appliances like the refrigerator, heater, or any other gadget are functioning properly.
Surveying Inside and Out
Regularly inspect both the caravan’s interior and exterior for signs of wear and tear, including rust, cracks, or dents that could lead to a leak. Early detection can prevent minor issues from turning into major problems, potentially saving you thousands in repairs.
Water Systems Check
Nothing dampens a trip like a leak, so be sure to inspect all water tanks for cracks or other signs of damage, and ensure that your pipes and hoses are intact, free from kinks, and show no signs of wear or mildew.
Climate Control
The last thing you want is to head out on a summer road trip only to find your air conditioner isn’t working. So, whether you plan on travelling in the scorching heat or bone-chilling cold, check your caravan’s air conditioning and heating systems are working so you can remain in total comfort throughout your journey.
Proper Preparation Will Guarantee a Memorable Trip
As with many things in life, success in caravanning often lies in the preparation. By taking the time to go through a thorough pre-trip maintenance check, you’re setting the stage for a journey that’s both memorable, safe and successful.
If you’re looking to dive into the world of caravanning this summer, start your adventure with Fantasy Caravans. Rugged, reliable and affordable, our caravans are perfect for first-timers and experienced owners alike. Explore the range today and find your dream model. Happy travels!
How to Tighten Caravan Wheel Nuts
Ensuring your caravan’s wheel nuts are tightened properly and safely is essential to avoiding an accident when you’re out on the road. In this video, we show you the correct way to tighten the wheel nuts on your Fantasy Caravan and have also included a step-by-step guide below for your convenience. Have a read and stay safe out there!
Step 1: Make sure your torque wrench is set to 150 and start with the top wheel nut, tightening it until you hear a click from your torque wrench.
Step 2: Next, you want to tighten your bottom wheel nut to ensure that the wheel is under equal tension.
Step 3: Repeat this process again with the top-right wheel nut, followed by the bottom-left wheel nut. It is essential to tighten opposite wheel nuts after each other.
Step 4: Finally, tighten the bottom-right wheel nut followed by the top-left, before giving each wheel nut one last check to ensure that they are equally tightened.
Remember to tighten your wheel nuts both before and after long trips, to ensure that none of them have rattled loose on your adventures. Happy travels!

Caravan Towing Weights Explained
With our range of Hybrid Campers, Small Caravans and Semi Off-Road Caravans, Fantasy Caravans are great for towing all over Australia. But before you get your heart set on one, it’s essential to ensure the caravan weights match your tow vehicle weights. If you’re new to caravanning, these can seem confusing, so we created a guide to explain caravan weights and towing weights in greater detail.

The consequences of overweight towing can be life-threatening. Be sure you know the weight limits on your car and caravan so as not to put yourself or others at risk. Improper loading can cause your caravan to sway uncontrollably or make it hard to stop, and if you’re involved in an accident, you won’t be covered by insurance no matter who’s at fault.
Write down your current or intended tow vehicle weights and keep them somewhere easy to find, like in your owner manual or saved on your phone. Make sure you have them with you to compare with your intended caravan weights because if you can’t tow it, you’ll need to either look at a different caravan or a new tow vehicle.
Caravan Weights
The key caravan weights to note and understand are the Gross Trailer Mass (GTM), Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM), Tow Ball Weight, Tare Weight, and Payload.
You’ll find these weights and everything you need to work out the maximum payload on the caravans compliance plate.
Tare Weight
Once it’s finished being built, the caravan is weighed with its water tanks and gas bottles empty. This is the caravans tare weight.
Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM)
Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) is the maximum weight of your caravan loaded up. This includes its tare weight and anything else carried by the caravan, including water and gas.
Payload
The caravan’s payload is the difference between its Tare Weight and ATM, which tells you how much weight can be loaded into the caravan.
Tow Ball Mass
(TBM)Tow Ball Mass is how much downward weight there is on the caravan’s coupling. This will vary depending on whether you’re loading weight in front of or behind the axle, so you should always check your TBM with a ball weight scale.
The empty ball weight on the caravans compliance plate does not include water in the tanks or gas in the gas bottles.
Gross Trailer Mass (GTM)
Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) is the weight limit on the caravan’s axles when towing. This is different from the ATM because the weight from the coupling is on the car, not the caravan.

Tow Vehicle Weights
The key weights to note and understand for your tow vehicle are Tare Weight, Kerb Weight (KW), Maximum Payload, Towing Capacity, Tow Ball Mass (TBM), Gross Combination Mass (GCM), and Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM).
The tow vehicle manufacturer sets these weights, and you’ll find this information in your owner’s manual or online.
Tare Weight
A vehicle’s Tare Weight is its total weight as it was built with nothing in it except 10 litres of fuel and all necessary fluids, like oil.
Kerb Weight (KW)
Kerb Weight (KW) means the car’s total weight as it was built with nothing in it except a full tank of fuel and all necessary fluids, like oil.
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is the maximum total weight of a car. It’s best to start with the Kerb Weight (KW) and add anything inside the vehicle, like people and luggage.
Payload
A car’s payload is how much weight it can carry. The difference between the Kerb Weight (KW) and the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is a tow vehicle’s maximum payload with a full fuel tank.
Towing Capacity
The maximum weight your tow vehicle is rated to tow is its Towing Capacity. There are two kinds, braked and unbraked towing capacity.
Braked Towing Capacity
Braked Towing Capacity is the maximum overall weight the car can tow with an electric brake controller. Installing an electric brake controller is how you work the electric brakes on a caravan.
Make sure your tow bar is rated to tow as much as your car. Otherwise, you’ll need to keep under whichever limit is lower.
Unbraked Towing Capacity
The Unbraked Towing Capacity is the amount a tow vehicle can tow without installing electric brakes. It is illegal to tow anything over 750kg without electric brakes and an electric brake controller. Therefore, you will need one to tow a caravan.
Gross Combination Mass (GCM)
Gross Combination Mass (GCM) is the overall weight limit of your tow vehicle and caravan together when towing. Make sure you factor in people in the car and water in the fuel tanks as everything is counted.
Tow Ball Weight
A tow vehicle’s maximum tow ball weight is its weight limit on the tow ball.
Make sure your tow bars tow ball weight limit is as much as your car. Otherwise, you’ll need to keep under whichever limit is lower.
HOW TO UNDO ARK750 JOCKEY WHEEL
An essential piece of equipment on any caravan, the jockey wheel allows you to manoeuvre your van with ease. In order to undo and safely stow the jockey wheel on your Fantasy Caravan, watch the video above or read our guide below.
Step 1: Once your caravan is securely hitched to the tow ball with the safety chain fastened, wind the jockey wheel down to lower the caravan’s weight completely onto the tow ball.
Step 2: Once the jockey wheel has been wound down completely and all the weight is off the wheel, pull out the retention handles on the left and right side of the wheel.
Step 3: Remove the handle from the pillar of the jockey wheel and set it to one side.
Step 4: Rotate the jockey wheel anti-clockwise, so the wheel swings up and nestles underneath the stone guard at the front of the caravan.
Step 5: Push the retention handles back into place and wiggle the wheel to ensure that it is secure.
Step 6: Stow the handle safely in your vehicle or caravan, and get ready to hit the road.
